Radon Testing

You've probably already heard about radon, but you might not know that...

  • You can't see, smell or taste it.
  • It's believed to be the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.
  • It's ranked by the E.P.A as one of the most serious environmental health problems facing us today
  • It may be a problem in as many as 1 in 8 Michigan homes.
  • In some Michigan counties, as many as 45% ot the homes could have elevated radon levels.

The only way to know for sure if you have radon in your home is to test for it.

Fortunately, testing for radon is easy and inexpensive. You can get a test for only $10 - $25. It's really up to you to find out if radon is a problem in your home.

To get a radon test kit:

  • Call or visit your local health department or
  • Contact the American Lung Association of Michigan.

Where does radon come from?

It's a naturally occuring radioactive gas resulting from the breakdown of uranium in the soil.

How does radon get into my home?

It comes up through the soil and rocks around your home and seeps through cracks in the concrete walls and floors, floor drains, sump pumps, joints, and hollow block walls.

How do I know if I have radon in my home?

By testing with an EPA-listed test kit or by hiring an EPA-listed contractor to test your home for you.

Is radon a fixable problem?

Yes. Problems can sometimes even be fixed by the homeowner.

If my neighbor has tested for radon, do I need to?

Yes. Radon levels are different from house to house. The only way to know if you have a problem is to test your home.
